Tomb Raider digital version on PSN requires internet for launch

Square Enix it seems has included a DRM with the PSN version of Tomb Raider.

UPDATE: The text about always online internet required was mistakenly put there by the store staff. The game requires no internet connection to launch.

ORIGINAL STORY: This is what greets the player on the PSN Store. You have to sign in to PSN whenever you play the game, however, the retail version does not have this requirement.

It’s unclear why such a DRM has been implemented on the PSN version but we will send an e-mail to Square Enix.

Meanwhile if you are planning to buy the digital version, it would be advisable to wait for a while.

We’ve seen such a DRM before in select downloadable titles but this could be the first time it has actually been implemented in an AAA game.

We will keep you updated.

Glad I grabbed the ps3 retail version yesterday.big AAA titles like this, uncharted, Batman, god of war, etc, I want to have the discs, so I can play it,even in 10 years, without having to worry if psn still exists or not.
By the away, tomb raider graphics engine is absolutely stunning, with incredible lights, textures, everything. There is not even 1% of aliasing on the graphics. If you guys want a great AAA game, run and grab it, just like I did yesterday. And it’s a huge uncharted fan who is telling you this.

I agree with having big games on discs. Discs are also cheaper most of the time anyway. Tomb Raider is currently £31.90 on Amazon. The game should appear on PSN today. I’ll bet the PSN price will be no less than £49.99.

Its stupid rules like these that will keep gamers from EVER wanting a console thats 100%digital download only! As long as stipulations like these persist there’ll always be plenty of people who demand buying physical copies over digital download.

What. The. Fuck. Anyone who is reading this and hates these kind of practices go leave feedback at Sony’s and square Enix’s feedback page. I am getting really sick of this crap and going to do so right now.

    • Tammy

      this is a good idea

  • Jabari

Nigga it on now, not buying anymore square Enix games until they patch this and they can expect a slew of angry emails.

  • Claptored

Getting really sick of this shit

  • Zigtek

Are you serious? NO OTHER GAME I HAVE PLAYED HAS THIS ON PSN. Will not buy anymore square products until they patch or fix this. No joke

  • Pyrocrelted

I’m done, going to email square and Sony now, anyone reading this please help.

  • Pyrocrelted

Once again square enix shows just how backwards and utterly Asinine they are, going to their feedback page now

  • Twizzle

Well, there’s one game I wont be buying then. Square shouldn’t even have the option to do this.

  • Taracorn

Gamechup, please email square enix telling them to get rid of this. Consumers need to start banding together to stop this crap from happening. If we can get rid of it in the music industry we can get rid of it in the games industry.

  • lilith

Square Enix, once again. Well… they just lost a customer

    • Manny33

True, not buying any games from them until this is fixed, help us by emailing Sony and Edios/Square

      • annoracked

        Where?

        • Manny23

Google “ask Sony a question” and “square enix support” and you should find them easy

  • Dammek78

Sorry guys, but I wont buy this game until this is removed.

  • Andies

We need to work together and stop this now

  • Carmack

I hope this news site will help us against this stupid practice

  • Playstationplused

I’m really starting to hate some gaming companies today

& everyone else that doesn’t seem to be able to read.

This only affects the download version of the game, not the retail disc version. If you don’t like DRM you have the option not to buy the version with the DRM.

You don’t need to be a bunch of drama queens!

What the hell is wrong with gamers these days? Bunch of over entitled cry-babies. WAHH I WONT DO THIS! WAHH! I WANT MY MOM!

  • SirCrush

Okay first off, this is a disclaimer for downloaded titles…if you downloaded the damn thing, why WOULDN’T you be online? Try booting it up WITHOUT ann internet connection. I’d be willing to bet you get the same disclaimer or the game just boots right up without one, either way allowing you to play while offline.

You say you’ll keep us updated? Try those two things and update with your results.
