Naughty Dog had earlier refused to keep Ellie, the main protagonist of The Last of Us, on the back of the box art of the game and they succeeded too. It has also been revealed by the creative director, Neil Druckmann, that he had a secret goal of changing the industry with the game.
He recently gave a talk at the Toronto chapter of the International Game Developers Association, where he said: “I wanted to create one of the coolest, non-sexualized female video game protagonists. And I felt that if we did that, there’s an opportunity to change the industry. I know it sounds pretentious, but that was my goal.”
It will take a lot of effort from content creators to create positive content and encourage more women to work in the industry, and The Last of Us was a great way to showcase that.
