The Last of Us: Naughty Dog Dev Explains How They Made Blood Look Realistic

Naughty Dog has always been known for the attention to detail they put in their games.

The Uncharted series is known for having some of the most spectacular visual effects and it looks like The Last of Us is set to replicate the same.

A Naughty Dog visual effects designer, who goes by the handle NDdoug on Reddit, has explained in a popular thread how the studio made the blood look and flow realistically.

“We spent a lot of time watching how blood behaved. We saw that it maintained a consistent form and as it separated it began to separate clusters,” he wrote.

“We did this by simulating/hand painting the elements at different values based on the stages of transformation. Then based on the number of stages of separation we divided 255 by that number and then added the layers together.

“Then we created a material that would allow us to threshold the single image over a given time so the blood would look like it’s separating as its flying through the air. There are a bunch of other crazy things we’re doing but that’s the basis. TL;DR we used math and reference.”

Yeah, so uh, they used math. Amazing isn’t it? Here’s a GIF of how the blood flows in the game.

I don’t see how that gif represents blood flow but I’ve seen enough gameplay to know the blood looks awesome!
