Steam Down on Christmas, “Could Not Connect To The Steam Network” Error

steam controller

It seems the Steampowered website and the Steam client is down. Users are getting a “Could not connect to the Steam Network” error.

Earlier it was revealed that a hacker group called Phantom Squad were going to take out PSN and Xbox Live on Christmas so it could be their doing. Steam rarely goes down so this is very surprising.

The website is down as well and it can’t be that too many people are using it due to the sales since it’s been a few days since the sale went live. We will keep you updated once we get more information on this.

PSN is acting a bit weird as well but there doesn’t seem to be any major problems there. Here’s the error some Steam users are getting.

Happening to me, too. Often getting:

An error occurred while processing your request.

Me too. It is awesome, my boys and girlfriend got me some steam bucks to buy a game. It took about 40 minutes to finally get onto the store and add it to my wallet. LOL, now I can’t get into the store part of it and that was working before I added the bucks. It would be nice to access the store while the sale is going, so I hope this isn’t some asshats messing with Steam web servers like they did with Xbox last year. Thanks guys, could just screw with Facebook for a change. lol

I can login to Steam (I’m on the east coast if that makes any difference) but can’t access the store. No errors given, just loads a blank page in the client. Earlier this morning I wasn’t able to access the client at all.

I read that the hackers were targeting all major gaming platforms this year, not because they are “doing evil” but because they do it to force the companies to up their level of security due to their (hackers) ableness to bring the network(s) down and/or bypass security. I guess it depends on whose point of view you want to see it from. Either way, it sucks for the consumers!
