Sony Patents method to award trophies based on disc access

Yeah, we don’t know what’s this about either, but it does sound intriguing.

Sony has filed a new patent which details different methods of offering trophies to users. The one that was discovered is called “Method and Apparatus for awarding trophies”.

“A method and apparatus for adding trophy support games that do not have trophies without modifying the original game,” the patent states.

“The method and apparatus are used to detect particular disk access, use the detected disk access as potential trophy triggers in games, and recognize the triggers while a game is played. Trophies are awarded based on the triggers, and the awarded trophies are stored.”

This patent was filed in September last year and was published today. Here’s a diagram of the thing.

This diagram has an official explanation as well, and gives an idea of how it works.

“A method for assigning one or more trophies to a user, comprising: accessing media content; defining one or more trophies; defining a trigger associated with the media content; detecting the trigger during media content access; and assigning the one or more trophies to a user account that is associated with the user in response to the detected trigger.”

This would be for PS2, PS1, even PS3 games that don’t have trophies. So when you play them on PS4, they can all have trophies without the developers having to be involved!

Not at all. Nothing to be cheerful about. It’s trophies DRM. Only the first buyer of a disc will be able to earn trophies. Anti-used games policy.

Don’t know if there is reason to be suspicious just yet. xDD I mean yeah, apart from PS4 being able to monitor your every move xD.

But for now it seems Joshstork is right. That is the basic idea it seems.

I just wish trophies meant something…maybe a reward system. Bronze = $0.01, Silver = $0.05 Gold = $0.25 Platinum = $1. Then I be buying more games and going after them…as of now, I could care less.

You couldn’t care less. The way you say it, you’re saying you do care, but nobody but tards care about the rip-off trophy system.

I not sure what you’re trying to say. But I don’t care about trophies in their current form. That was my point. There needs to be something in place that would want me to pursue trophies besides gamer pride.

Then don’t say “I could care less” with the word “could” in future. Use “couldn’t”. No matter how trivial people think it is, semantics do, and always will, matter.

I see what you two(?) are getting at the ‘ol could vs. couldn’t debate, but I’m just surprise that you’d go that far to mention it. Couldn’t is indeed correct, but could in this case is also a common American colloquialism, which is fine for an informal comment board especially since you were able to derive my meaning. I appreciate the correction as a teacher myself, but I would have rather you comment on my meaning and not my writing.

more than actual money, their should be points, l; like in the UPlay (ubisoft store), with these point i could redeem, wallpaper, dlc, some costumes , some weapon, some extra. becuase of this i am tempted to buy ubisoft games for only pc.

Points or actual money….it’s all the same. I was going to go with points when I posted originally. Go point though…

Not sure how you can patent this. It’s just a checklist.

Basically it’s making trophy support for possible PS3/PS2/PS1 games that didn’t get the support; So in conclusion they are making it simpler for trophy support to be on games that either didn’t make PS2/PS1 backwards compatibility or PS1/PS2 greatest hits in the PS Store(I’m guessing?) AND the PS3 games that don’t have trophy support either. However according to the diagrams, in order for this to work the games have to based on disc access. It can’t be from the PS Store or digital download. That is problem number one I see, problem number two would be a question to the developers? “Can you be bother to release the same game that was released on X platform again with trophy support?” There is a high cost number for this i.e. patching trophies, allocating resources for these said games, and the total time it would take to do this. Usually they don’t want to any of this. But we will see if this patent goes through or not I like the idea though. :]
