SimCity has been a game that the developers insisted even before release that connecting to their servers was vital for game performance and the game wouldn’t work without it.
Well a modder has removed it and has also made it possible to build highways outside the region.
This is a bit shocking thing because it kind of proves that the game didn’t really require the always online DRM, and the developer’s justification was all but a lie.
“And yes I also modded out the disconnect timer (can now play “offline” indefinitely – but no saves/syncs or region related stuff, not yet anyway… but the simulation can carry on with no connection indefinitely),” he wrote.
“And I modded out the “fluffed population count”, just shows the real population count now. Both very minor/easy tweaks.”
Will EA release a new patch to make the game playable offline? We doubt it, but what this shows is that the ability and determination of people to take matters into their own hands should not be underestimated.
The game was released last week to reviews that have panned the game for this whole server debacle, and EA has assured that the server issues are fixed and have offered a free game as apology. However, it’s not clear whether they are offering refunds for the game because they refused to do that to one guy.
The video below shows how exactly he did it and you can also see him placing highways there.
