Remedy Explains Why Quantum Break is Exclusive to Xbox One

Quantum Break was first shown at the Xbox One reveal event on May 21st and we have some new information on the game. It’s said to be the “ultimate Remedy experience”, and will borrow the best elements from Alan Wake and Max Payne games.

You guessed it right, it will feature interactive storytelling from Alan Wake and cinematic combat and shooting mechanics from Max Payne.

It is also exclusive to Xbox One, and Remedy have mentioned that it would have been impossible to create a game like this without Microsoft’s help.

“This is clearly a strategic move for them as well as us. This is something – we have crazy ideas – but we need to fall back and let the full force of a company like Microsoft see it through,” Matias Myllyrinne, CEO of Remedy, told GI International in an interview.

“There’s no way on God’s green Earth that we would take on a venture like this on our own. We might have the appetite but there’s no way we could.

“For us, our interests are nicely aligned. We serve a strategic purpose for them in delivering unique content for their platform with a unique twist. And for us that allows us follow the creative passion that the team needs to fulfil through a project like this.”

Remedy also revealed some in-engine gameplay footage at E3.

@GribbleGrunger: Why have you copied both my sig and my ‘doctored’ sig picture? And why are you posting on several sites like this? I’m a Sony fan and always have been, so why are your posts so opposite to my preferences? You are trolling these sites to try and discredit me on other sites. Carry on if you wish but you will be reported.

Just someone who is slightly more intelligent than you, sir, and doesn’t feel it necessary to take something so seriously that I copy a user and try to discredit them. Now grow the hell up.

      • GribbleGrunger

Seriously, this kind of trolling is really, really lame. Whatever you might think of someone else, however they may have behaved (noting I have no issues with the real GGs behaviour), behaving in this way says far more about you than the actual GG, and what it says doesn’t reflect well.

Edit: Apologies if I’ve posted this in response to the wrong GG – ie, this is supposed to be in response to the troll GG, not the original one ;).

Wouldn’t that be quite obvious for most 3rd party exclusive games??? They are exclusive because where paid for???

    • Will

      July 17, 2013 at 9:12 pm

They should have clarified by saying “This wouldn’t have been possible without a publisher” without necessarily insinuating Microsoft was the only company who could see it through.

      • dirkradke

        July 17, 2013 at 11:56 pm

Why wouldn’t they emphasize a relationship with Microsoft? How could that possibly hurt them since they have a good reputation as a developer?

        • Will

          July 18, 2013 at 12:01 am

I didn’t imply they were hurting themselves by doing it, but rather it’s a misleading statement. To most people (without the context of reading into it) will assume he meant due to some advantage Xbone has over other competing consoles.

          • dirkradke

            July 18, 2013 at 12:45 am

It’s exclusive because a large publisher like Microsoft has a console and they want the game developed for it not because that console has anything specific that would allow the game to be produced for that console alone and nobody else. If you actually read the whole article it is not misleading and makes no implications about X-Box One only that a large company like Microsoft could make it happen. I took this to mean Sony could make it happen as well, but Remedy chose Microsoft.

          • Will

            July 18, 2013 at 12:49 am

I respect what you’re saying, but you’re not understanding me. I’m not saying this article is misleading. I’m saying how Matias Myllyrinne positioned his initial comment about it not being possible to create in any other way, until it was further ellaborated.

  5. Darrius

    July 17, 2013 at 10:24 pm

Right, it’s exclusive because Microsoft paid them.

    • zakcole

      July 18, 2013 at 1:23 am

Sony have never paid for exclusives? Devs pitch there game to studios looking for somebody to fund them. If Microsoft funded them what the hell is wrong with that? Sony could have funded them too but obviously passed or didn’t want it as much as Microsoft. Maybe they thought they had better to offer already. Maybe they thought it would bomb.

If it does do well though, as often is the case in these situations, Sony will be kicking themselves.

IGN gave it a 9? Looks like it would have been above 9 but they’re rating system didn’t have .x before. 83% on Metacritic 8.5 on Gamespot 86 on PC gamer.

      So? Hmmm…

  7. dirkradke

    July 17, 2013 at 11:52 pm

Why are people so upset by this when a developer goes to a company like Microsoft and tells them if you want this game to be good we need money. Microsoft tells them make it exclusive and we will give it to you. Do people think Sony wouldn’t do this if they felt it was in there interest? Sony has no more holiness than any other large multinational corporation. They have what 30 exclusives for PS4 already? Are people simply upset because Sony was asleep or wasn’t asked? Every publisher does the same thing. As for people who say Alan Wake was a bad game or over hyped it was Time’s 1st of the Top 10 in 2010 and sold over 2 million copies at that point. It was a quite successful game. I could see why Microsoft would want to continue or renew the relationship.

You totally forgot the other platform out of the three major players: PC (Windows).
Windows is a Microsoft product, a flagship one at that and the main reason for their existence so please tell me why, when they pay for exclusivity, they shouldn’t include both their children? Windows and XBOX?
…And please don’t say piracy, because if a game’s good, people do buy it. It’s why Steam’s thriving.

Nothing wrong with this at all – Microsoft and Remedy have a partnership to put together what will (hopefully, and based on past form) be a great game. Nothing to get worked up about here folks. There are great exclusives on pretty much any platform, if XB1 isn’t your flavour of console, you’ll have plenty of other good stuff on PC/PS4/Wii U :)

It’s funny how you mention Microsoft in a way as if Xbox is the only Microsoft platform.
You’re forgetting PC (technically, Windows) is also a Microsoft platform, albeit a software one. When Microsoft turns their back on PC like that, you can understand all the hate towards them.

      • Axe99

        June 4, 2015 at 7:43 am

Aye, although personally I preferred PC gaming before Microsoft got a strangehold on the platform. PC wasn’t always just windows, and you got a lot more bang for your hardware back when that was the case.

This, for me, would be a game I’d buy the console for. However I’ll be hopeful that it will at some point be ported to PC. Not because I don’t like consoles, just simply because it’s cheaper for me to buy a $60 game than it is to buy a $400 console AND a $60 game lol.

At least because they where paid is a better more honest reason than “Some games are best played from a comfy couch” PC games are also capable of being played this way! Especially after the advent of bigger screened computer monitors, projectors, HDMI and various controller options.

I played Alan Wake for PC from my comfy couch. :P

I’d love to find the douche bag at Microsoft whose responsible for all these exclusives and punch him/her in the face.

Another year, another instance of Microsoft betraying Windows customers with exclusivity deals. They behave like we’re not their customers.
