Nvidia: PS4 GPU is more powerful than Xbox 720’s GPU, but 3x slower than Titan

Nvidia has revealed that PS4’s GPU is 3x slower than Nvidia’s Titan.

That shouldn’t be a surprise to many because the Titan costs $1000 and has a 3 teraflops and above computational performance. However, the PS4’s GPU is no slouch either and is supposed to be better than the Xbox 720’s GPU.

This echoes with all the reliable rumours that have been released so far. It’s also not clear whether Microsoft has done last minute changes to their system after the PS4’s specs were announced, but that seems like an unlikely thing at this stage because it will undoubtedly create a delay which they cannot afford.

Here’s the chart they presented at GDC 2013. (via Japanese site 4gamer)

Now according to this chart, it seems this data was provided by Jon Peddle Research to Nvidia, and presenting such a thing at GDC clearly means that they agree with the data somewhat.

This chart also reveals how the Xbox 360 GPU, Xenos, was much better than PS3’s RSX. In a way it kind of shows that these consoles surpassed PC tech at the time they were released in 2006, but it’s not going to same next generation due to massive advancements in PC tech. However, it’s still a great leap as far as console tech is concerned.

Microsoft’s reveal may completely change this though, so take this as a rumour for now.

Nvidia still provides things like Physx etc. Hardware isn’t the only thing they do, but they know :)

considering that pc devs use about 30% of the power of a random pc setup,ps4 is actually going to perform better than titan.(0.9 times the ps4 gpu after 3 or 4 years when devs master coding on the ps4 hardware)

Buy a PS4 because you want the games, but don’t lie to yourself about what it is or what it is capable of. Search for the ‘PS4 PC Elemental Comparison’ and you’ll see that it had to be dumbed down quite a bit to run on the PS4.

Except that he is right because 1 TFLOP-CONSOLE > 1 TFLOP PC, the demo was running on a PS4 development kit, not the actual thing, and that Brian Karis, senior graphics programmer at Epic Games, said about the comparison they had not time enough to work on the demo and that: “Feature wise most everything is the same, AA resolution, meshes, textures (PS4 has tons of memory), DOF (I assure you both use the same Bokeh DOF, not sure why that one shot has different focal range), motion blur.”

“Biggest differences are SVOGI has been replaced with a more
efficient GI solution, a slight scale down in the number of particles
for some FX, and tessellation is broken on ps4 in the current build
which the lava used for displacement. We will fix the tessellation in
        the future.”

    4.5 Teraflops / 1.84 Teraflops is not 3x.
