New PlayStation Eyepad controller patent discovered

It seems Sony has been working on a variety of controllers for PS4.

This new patent which was filed in 2012, is about something called the ‘PlayStation Eyepad’.

It has the form factor of a tablet and can work in conjunction with cameras that are actually on both sides of the device to generate 3D virtual buttons and more. You can then use it as any other normal controller. It also features a touchpad, which the PS4 controller was also rumoured to have.

Here’s the official description for it:

An input device for an entertainment device comprises a first main surface, one or more side edges, one or more motion sensors operable to generate motion data, and a wireless communicator for transmitting the motion data to the entertainment device, wherein an elongate illuminated region extends along some or all of one or more of the side edges; in addition the input device may comprise a first stereoscopic camera and a second stereoscopic camera having respective viewpoints located at opposing corners of a first area of the main surface, the field of view of each stereoscopic camera encompassing a first volume of space immediately above the first area, wherein the first and second stereoscopic cameras are operable to generate respective stereoscopic images, from which a first depth map and complementary second depth map may be generated for opposite sides of an object placed within the first volume of space.

OMFG Epic Fail! Especially if this is for the PS4.

  • Mike

At this point i think any touch add ons to the basic controller will be an epic fail and seen as a gimmick, why not use the money to improve vibrate? err I mean rumble.

I thought that nobody likes the Wii U. This is sort of contradicting considering that the PS4 controllers seem to be using screens. Nintendo once again has the element of surprise on their side. One thing about Nintendo is that they never copy intentionally, they’re innovators. It has been that way since the late 1800s.

    • ThePokeMaster

Yup, Nintendo invented everything gaming back in the late 1800s, since before the automobile was even in production. /s
I also like how you added the word “intentionally” as to make an excuse for Nintendo.

Oh and guess what devices used touchscreens and touchpads before the Wii U….. that’s right! Sony devices. PS Vita and other tablets and phones have been doing it for years.

Guess who made the first analog stick on controllers? Not Nintendo. Sony, the NeoGeo CD, etc.

Rumble? Not Nintendo. In fact, it was simultaneous. Nintendo released the RumblePak at the same time Sony released the Dual-Analog Controller with built-in rumble.

The grips on controllers. Guess who did that before Nintendo…. that’s right! Sony.

Clickable analog sticks before the Wii U? Sony, since the PS1.

Quad shoulder buttons and dual analogs? Sony.

Nintendo should at least copy a decent online system.

which one? the one that got massively hacked and was down for more than a week?

      • eaden

The Nintendo DS had touch screens before the Vita

        • ThePokeMaster

Everything has a touchscreen. So who cares, it’s not a competition.

      • awaiken

They were. Nintendo has been around for over a hundred years smart ass.

        • ThePokeMaster

Nintendo has not been around as a gaming company for over a hundred years.
          Use common sense.

          • awaiken

no shit, nobody said they were. the only thing said was that Nintendo has been an innovative company for over a hundred years. Nice strawman.
