GC 2013: Xbox One Hardware UI Screenshots Released

Microsoft has released some screenshots for Xbox One’s UI. These screenshots were released after their Gamescom conference which wasn’t live streamed. They show multitasking while playing a game, along with the game invite notification and other things.

You can check them out below.

Why couldn’t Microsoft show more on Halo? Like seriously, they know people want answers so why not give those answers at Gamescom? Why wait all the way until E3 to show more?

Because Halo would would overshadow everything else from that point on, and they don’t want/need that. MS is well past the days of needing that 1 flagship title/franchise to sell their console. Hell, they haven’t even announced anything Gears related…and the 360 was synonymous with Gears, almost as much as with Halo this gen.

True, and also don’t wanna rush it I’m sure so it’s good I suppose that nothing else has been said about it up to this point, but they do always give updates at E3 so it’ll be a long wait until then. But yeah, it’s good Microsoft is expanding their exclusives lineup because they really need it this time around. For Gears, a rep from Epic Games said they’re not done with it yet but that it would be awhile before we got another since they wanna give other IPs the spotlight for now, so we probably won’t see that for another few years. Although I want to check out the other games such as Quantum Break and Project Spark, I always look forward to Halo first and foremost so as soon as they have an update on it and announce a bundle with the game and a cool Halo inspired/designed Xbox One I’m getting Xbox One. For now, I’ll just get PS4 first, although I’m getting neither consoles at launch as I’m cashing out on Wii U and 3DS this holiday since I already have those consoles and good games are finally coming out for them, though many gamers have given up on them at this point.

Because there’s nothing to show at the moment? You don’t just throw meat to the crowd to shut them up if your product isn’t ready.

Well they don’t have to show game play…the least they could do is give a few new screenshots or so to ensure gamers the game isn’t on the on or something. Obviously showing an unfinished product that will look entirely different from the final version doesn’t guarantee fan service, a la Aliens Colonial Marines. But they could show they care more as Halo fans rarely get any info when it comes to the next entry in Halo… either Microsoft shows it only at E3 or does an interview or two and then that’s it… I just want them to be more approachable to Halo fans and show them they care by giving a image or new info of the game so fans know what to expect, but since they wanna build anticipation for it that would defeat their purpose if their marketing for the game so I suppose it’s better that we don’t know anything else for now when alpha footage or something is in playable form. Not that I rather be disappointed than not now anything but i just think Microsoft needs to work on connecting with the consumer more in terms of the status on their games, that’s all. But they sort of showed more than enough already; given that Spartan Assault was released just this year so soon after Halo 4 I see them delaying it to give 343 more time and not milk it out anymore, as quality is better than quantity hence why it’s only been mentioned once or twice since E3 so we will have to wait til E3 2014 just so Microsoft can public acknowledge the delay and piss off gamers even more. Just saying. Unless dev started on it before they finished Halo 4 I don’t know how they will maintain the quality with only 2 years of development on their hands instead of the usual 3, regardless that Xbox One will be easier for then to develop games for. That’s my take on it, as I myself am a hardcore Halo fan and can’t wait to play so sorry if my anticipation leaves my logic of the situation shortsighted but I don’t wanna be disappointed like I was with ODST and Reach.

Somehow I doubt the PS4 will be able to do what was demonstrated here very well.

I don’t know about that, but I am still waiting for a PS3 firmware update that actually fixes more than it fvcks up….and includes a UI overhaul even close to the 360 dashboard.

      • dirkradke

        August 21, 2013 at 3:33 am

The PS3 user interface is like using a computer. That probably wasn’t what they were going for. The 360 dashboard is more like using a well thought out interface designed for just about any “cool” appliance. Neither is really bad, but the one thing Microsoft knows far better than Sony is software.

That firmware update is a PS4. You’re not getting an overhaul of the XMB. There just aren’t resources for that.

Oh God, what? I’m right, wrong, insane, what? I have both a PS3 and 360 with updated user interfaces. While I don’t appreciate the advertizing on the 360 the interface is 10 times superior to that of the PS3. Microsoft has a lot of issues about listening to there customers, but the 1 thing they seem to get right is the interface which everyone has to use. There is after all a reason Windows has been so successful.

        • QwietStorm

          August 21, 2013 at 4:25 am

Yes, the 360 interface is more “exciting” than PS3. But that’s irrelevant today. I think the biggest, most clear reason everything about the PS4 looks so enticing is directly because of the shortcomings of the PS3. They went down the list and checked off everything. Both consoles now have different things to prove, but doubting PS4 could handle what’s seen here is just silly. Of course it can handle it, but it won’t, because they have different designers and different visions. Abd Windows certainly isn’t successful because of the UI or UX. That’s a whole other story that started decades ago.

            August 21, 2013 at 5:22 am

Didn’t mean it was more exciting just easier to use. Microsoft has had decades to perfect the right mentality of easier to use. Unfortunately, it also means they think they know what consumers want despite what consumers have said. One of the reasons they are more hated than just about anyone else. Windows would not be as successful as it is compared to other O.S. if people didn’t want it. 1 fact struck as interesting in a poll I saw was that Windows 95 & 98 is still easier to use than a current LINUX distribution for non-tech savvy users. The PS4 and X-Box One have the legacies of the previous incarnations of game consoles to go by and if you compare PS3 to 360 the PS3 loses by a wide margin in terms of user interface. I doubt the PS4 will be as bad an interface as the PS3, but Sony doesn’t really have a good track record in this aspect of console design.

The thing is, the XMB couldn’t be easier to use if the system did it for you. It may be boring and it may be slow, with the latter being for other reasons, but it hurts my head when people say it isn’t easy to use. It’s the most simple menu system I’ve ever seen. That’s partly why I put exciting in quotes, taking about the 360 interface. It has more going on, it’s more animated, it has transitions.. But as you said yourself, Microsoft is also known to believe they know what people want, even when they don’t. And when Apple chose to go proprietary and Microsoft the licensing route, they ran away with it. Now Windows is far ahead and in the lead, and on your PC whether you like it or not, as far as the masses go. I, for one, am not a fan of the Metro UI. I think it “works” on Windows Phone, but that’s about it. I could do without it on my gaming console, and certainly on desktop. But my whole point is that I feel the XMB cannot be assumed to repeat itself, as far as efficiency in actual practice, because of the paradigm shift in the design of the PS4 overall. I think which console has a “better” UI is irrelevant, as the parity between the two will be on a completely different competitive level than the current generation.

The PS3 interface compared to the 360 is crap. It is serviceable and works, but you can compare a Super Beetle to a Porsche all day and most people will pick a Porsche when choosing despite the higher costs such as live because overall it is easier to drive and looks better. I am not judging Windows I am judging the PS3 interface and the legacy Sony brings with it when designing said interface for the PS4. Time will tell whether it can compete with the X-Box One’s. It can hardly be worse than the PS3, but will it be as good as the X-Box One?

Note to MS: Deadmau5 was cool for awhile but rather bland now. Wish you would stop using him like it’s supposed to be “hip” or something. Maybe like 3 years ago..
