Well, well, well, if you would’ve told me 2 years ago that Final Fantasy XIV would sell 5 million copies, I would have laughed at you. The reason? The game’s launch was a spectacular failure with numerous technical issues. They had to make it free for people so that they wouldn’t bail out, while they try to salvage what they have.
And salvage they did. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn came out last year on the PS4 and PC and fixed many of the problems that plagued the main game. In march there were around 4 million people playing the game, which has now increased to 5 million.
Now, this is not comparable to World of Warcraft for obvious reasons, main being it’s almost 10 years old. Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward is one of the best pieces of content we’ve seen in an MMO with an amazing story.
Recently the Alexander raid went live and people have been having fun with that. Yoshida announced the sales numbers at Japan Expo.
