Crysis 3 is one of the best looking games ever made, and that comes at a cost too.
According to Crytek CEO, Cevat Yerli, the game had triple the budget of Crysis which was released way back in 2007. He also said that the console limitations were holding the team back and it was not possible to make a PC only game.
“The consoles are eight year old devices. Of course, in one way or another, they will limit you. It’s impossible not to limited by a limited console. By definition it’s the case. So if it were PC only, could we have done more things? Certainly, yes,” he said.
“Could we have afforded a budge to make a game like Crysis 3 PC only? No. People have to understand that this is a journey of give and take.”
Yerli had earlier revealed to IGN that Crysis cost $20 million. Since Crysis 3 had triple the budget of the original game, it’s easy to see how much it cost. It’s in excess of $60 million.
Now you may be wondering how it became so much since Crysis 3 was a short game. It’s a side effect of modern game creation. GTA 5 is rumoured to be the most expensive game ever made with a figure of $137 million.
When a new hardware is introduced budgets rise up sharply due to a learning curve that most developers have to face with. Considering the PS4 is easy to develop for, it could be mitigated in some ways, but the reality is that it is still an advanced piece of hardware which will require a lot of investment early on.
This is one of the reasons why we have seen so many studios shutter down this generation, and when games like Crysis 3 cost more than $60 million, one has to wonder if this way of development will eventually lead to an industry crash.
